The Atlantic Monthly, a Boston icon since 1857 was on an extremely compressed timeline to get into their new loft-like space on North Washington Street in Boston’s North End. They had to move into this vaulted terra cotta shell space within five months. Open work areas were not an option as most employees had individual editorial or creative tasks that resulted in a 13,000 square foot design with over 55 private work areas and offices. The Atlantic had an incredible legacy, and a very youthful, forward looking staff and a limited budget. Every opportunity to borrow light through the exterior offices through fixed glass was taken, and through some careful planning, each corridor and passageway (and there were many of them,) led to another turn…each chapter in the story leading to the next. Helicon partnered with Mulavey Studio on the design and project management.
